Lou Dobbs bought racist "Obama Waffles" at Values Voters Summit

A BUZZFLASH NEWS ALERT
by Amy Weiss

At the Values Voters Summit in D.C. last weekend, Mark Whitlock and Bob DeMoss were selling boxes of "Obama Waffles" for $10 per box. The box of waffle mix features a caricature of Obama reminiscent of stereotypical racist cartoons. The Family Research Council (FRC), the group that runs the conference, stopped the selling of the waffles and said they didn't realize before that they contained "offensive material."

The AP describes the waffles:

While Obama Waffles takes aim at Obama's politics by poking fun at his public remarks and positions on issues, it also plays off the old image of the pancake-mix icon Aunt Jemima, which has been widely criticized as a demeaning stereotype. Obama is portrayed with popping eyes and big, thick lips as he stares at a plate of waffles and smiles broadly.

Placing Obama in Arab-like headdress recalls the false rumor that he is a follower of Islam, though he is actually a Christian.

On the back of the box, Obama is depicted in stereotypical Mexican dress, including a sombrero, above a recipe for "Open Border Fiesta Waffles" that says it can serve "4 or more illegal aliens." The recipe includes a tip: "While waiting for these zesty treats to invade your home, why not learn a foreign language?"

The novelty item also takes shots at 2004 Democratic nominee John Kerry, Obama's wife, Michelle, and Obama's former pastor, the Rev. Jeremiah Wright.

While the creators claim their product is satirical and not racist, the FRC felt strongly enough to stop sales. A black pastor and member of the FRC, Harry Jackson, wrote a column on the conservative site Town Hall about the dangers of allowing people such as Whitlock and Moss a voice in this election:
There is one thing that could torpedo McCain's efforts - a sense that McCain is playing the race card against his opponent instead of using a legitimate political strategy. If the race is determined by the content of the candidates' character and a sportsman like contest, Americans will have realized Martin Luther King, Jr.'s dream. Therefore, even if Senator Obama is not elected president, the nation will acknowledge this as a watershed moment for the entire country. On the other hand, if racial slurs and prejudice are used by McCain supports it could cause a backlash among undecided voters that will cause the McCain/Palin ticket to lose.

The only negative thing that came out of the Values Voter's Summit was that two men from Franklin Tennessee (Mark Whitlock and Bob DeMoss) sold a product called "Obama Waffles" at the event until the conference leaders shut them down on Saturday. The Family Research Council issued a statement on behalf of all of the sponsors of the summit that we "strongly condemned the tone and content of the materials" of the product's packaging. As far as HILC is concerned, the so-called political "satire" on the boxes of waffles is racist and makes fun of all African Americans - not to mention unfairly demeaning Barak (sic) Obama. Two hundred and six newspaper articles carried the story of the waffles this weekend. Newspapers from Jerusalem to China felt that this story was newsworthy. If this last seven weeks of the campaign becomes a referendum on race, it will hurt race relations and the McCain campaign.
This has become a minor story, getting substantial coverage in the blog world. However, the AP version of the story does not mention that the creators of Obama Waffles had a photo on their Web site of Lou Dobbs, a speaker at the Values Voters Summit, purchasing them and reported that he said "My wife will love this." The photo and story has been removed from the site but bloggers were able to take screen shots before it was taken down.

So far, it appears no major media outlet has mentioned Dobbs' endorsement of the product. Dobbs does not appear to have been sufficiently pressured to respond, clarify, or issue an apology.

While the McCain campaign throws charges of sexism at the media and the Democrats -- a few legitimate, most preposterous -- the Obama campaign has been largely quiet on the issue of race. That may be a tactical decision, but regardless of how Obama takes on the story (the campaign has declined to comment in several reports), the mainstream media should at least get this out there. CNN at least owes its viewers an explanation as to why they have no problem with Dobbs' behavior as a representative of the network.

A BUZZFLASH NEWS ALERT

What the F*(k

I'm SICK OF IT ALL!!! Let's just get this over with already!! Who gives a shit about waffles or Lou Dobbs??? There are two people running and we have to pick one!! Hopefully our votes will count and we will get a President that will help us out of this mess we are in! IMO there is only one that can do that and it's NOT McSame!!! How come no one is talking about how Bush has screwed up the economy so much that now the banks are going under, with our money I might add!! This is ALL ON HIS HEAD yet no one is saying anything about it. And one more thing. How come they can bail out the banks but the people that have lost their homes get NO HELP AT ALL??? What a country we live in! Shame on US!!!

Obama Waffles

Oh God spare us all the self rightousness of the deep and meaningful. All the people complaining about the "racist" waffles are no different than the neocons who complain about lipstick and pigs. Are you seriously suggesting that a caricature of Obama or any minority politician is out of line? I hate the neocons and have no love for Republicans but I'm equally disgusted by the self-rightous lefties who insist that those who disagree with them are racists and should be kick off the air.

Why be suprized he a racist mother himself like most out of.....

touch whitemen who pretend that they are not racists. And of course his wife who he claims is a Southern Mexican (I still think she is a mail order slave opps I mean bride)will love the hate producing product that is sickening and ANYONE who FEELS that this is done all in fun are the real criminals in this country of many colors. To many times we stand aside and let our fear induced thoughts guide our higher selfs straight to the gutter blinded by the same fat tired old whitemen who got us in all the trouble in the first place and to top that off they make oddles of money and laugh at all of us all the way to the bank. STOP WATCHING THIS CLOWN AND LET CNN KNOW YOUR ON TO THEM. Come on folks STAND UP

Lou Dobbs

Lou Dobbs spends many hours night after night on the illegal immigration issue. May I ask: why is that such a high priority?

I Sincerely Doubt that Lou Dobbs Was Buying This...

...for hateful reasons, but more for the "I can't believe they're actually marketing this" shock value of the item in question. Funny how we're so willing to demean someone who's stood up for the country based on one incident. If the photo is true (could be, but isn't necessarily), I still don't buy that he appreciated the content on the box for the literal "value", but because it's outrageous.

Breeders

Loue Dobbs and Glen Beck are the same BREEDERS for the REPUBLICAN PARTY. Maby the back room KKK. Just my opinion

Lou Dobbs show needs to be dropped immediately

I read about this over the weekend and I already called CNN. This should be reported by the media at large. He is disgusting! Ditch this idiot! This is what they have at the hypocritical Values conference. And the number of people who spoke were all the usual suspects including Hannity, Newt, Schaffley, Michele Bachmann, Stephen Baldwin,Bill Bennett etc. etc. etc.

Racist or not

Obama *is* a waffler. He was against the war, but voted to fund it. He was agaisnt the FISA bill, but voted for it. He was against drilling, now he's for it.

His words have no more meaning than a dog barking.

He easily switches sides on issues to curry political favor. McCain is no better of course. Tweedledee vs. Tweedledum.

So it's OK?

So because you're pissed at Obama, it's OK to be a racist?

Who said it's ok?

What's happening here is Dem Party Apologists and Lesser Evilists changing the subject from Obama being a waffler to Dobbs being a racist.

Yes, Dobbs is a racist but he's not running for president. Obama is, and he's a waffler and a Republican is disguise.

The internet truly is amazing

According to the internets Obama is a republican in disguise, a neocon, a warmonger, a manchurian candidate, a terrorist sympathizer, a muslim, a radical black christian, a racist against white people, a black panther, a halfrican american, a marxist, a socialist, a communist, a capitalist, a sexist, worse than bush, the best since JFK, etc., etc., etc. It is quite an impressive feat to be all of those things. Everyone's an expert, but of course you're THE real expert, so thanks tinker.

Sort of like how you were ...

... THE real expert when it came to Hillary Clinton, huh, Vetta?

What's good for the goose ...

I already wrote a letter to CNN - let's keep pushing this story

View this link with close up pictures: http://www.mediatakeout.com/2008/26642-shocker_cnn_lou_dobbs_caught_in_racist_scandal__should_the_network_fire_him_.html It actually lists out the CNN Execs to whom you can address your emails to. They haven't yet responded to me but trust me, with the power of DIGG, Facebook, Twitter, MySpace and Blogs, no matter how much the MSM refuses to pick this up, WE THE PEOPLE will ensure that word about this spreads and reaches a tipping point. We must all stand up for truth and point out bad behavior to better our society. Spread the word and refuse to be bullied by the MSM

THROW IT BACK IN DOBBS FACE

I will begin a letter to CNN and I hope several thousand of you will do the same. This racist piece of filth should be taken off the air. CNN needs to hear from us. Post this on as many blogs as possible and news sites. I will.

Blowhard

Dobbs is a blowhard, performing for ratings. I hope the blowhard gets some blowback on this one.

Stop playing the race card

This ad is not racist, merely contrary to our point of view. Crying racism over this thing draws from the same cynical well that McCain did in picking Palin. There is already plenty of rope w/ which to trip up our foes (the hypocrisy of calling Obama a waffler, for example), and a myriad of examples of their ill-suited policies for America. We don't need to stoop to this level of knee-jerk hysteria over matters of such diaphanous substance.

What do you mean?

You say "contrary to OUR point of view." Since you are totally out of step with everyone here, who's the "our?"

The Box is Racist

and the folks who sold the waffles knew exactly what they were doing. I am sick and tired of folks being apologist for the Republicans and their racist tactics. The RNC looked like klan meeting. I never saw so many evil and mean spirited folks in my life in one place. I wouldn't put it pass the Republicans and those so-called christian to pull a stunt like this to please their racist minions.

Actually, We DO

B/c that waffle box IS racist.... ...or would you find a Sarah Palin IUD w/her grinning face on it just as amusing, hmmm...?
