Angry Florida Republicans threaten Oprah with boycott over contrived Palin controversy

A BUZZFLASH NEWS ALERT
by Amy Weiss

The Florida Federation of Republican Women (FFRW) is encouraging its members to boycott the Oprah Winfrey Show and cancel their subscriptions to her "O" magazine because she does not plan to have Republican Vice-Presidential nominee Sarah Palin as a guest before the November election.

FFRW President Linda Ivell said, "We are deeply disappointed in Ms. Winfrey's decision to sit out the greatest political moment in the history of women since suffrage."

Ivell conveniently overlooked Geraldine Ferraro's vice-presidential nomination by the Democratic Party 24 years ago as well as Shirley Chisholm's and Hillary Clinton's historic runs.

She also failed to mention that Oprah was careful not to have any political candidates on her show during this election cycle.

As Oprah said in a statement: "At the beginning of this presidential campaign when I decided that I was going to take my first public stance in support of a candidate, I made the decision not to use my show as a platform for any of the candidates."

By not allowing any candidate as a guest and keeping her show neutral, Oprah is acting inappropriately according to the FFRW.

Ivell also takes credit for Oprah's success, saying "Women in Florida helped build Oprah into the icon she is today." She continued, "We find it to be an abuse of her power --gained on the backs of our patronage of her advertising empire -- to use her program to so blatantly support Obama in the face of this historic moment."

The Oprah controversy erupted after an allegation on the Drudge Report that her staff was divided on having Palin appear.

"The item in today's Drudge Report is categorically untrue," Oprah's Friday statement said. "There has been absolutely no discussion about having Sarah Palin on my show... I agree that Sarah Palin would be a fantastic interview, and I would love to have her on after the campaign is over."

Obama appeared on Oprah's show in September 2005 and October 2006. Both appearances were before he announced his candidacy and before her endorsement.

Ivell said her organization respects Oprah's endorsement of Obama "as every American is entitled to their personal opinion and vote."

Essentially, the FFRW think Oprah's TV show impartiality, a distinct effort to avoid an "abuse of power," is biased.

The New York Times reported Sunday:

It is not clear whether Ms. Palin had even asked to go on Oprah's famous couch, but it is clear that Ms. Winfrey doesn't want her. The campaign of Senator John McCain, the Republican presidential nominee, declined to comment, but Ms. Winfrey's rejection of the Republican vice presidential nominee is playing right into the storyline being advanced by Republican operatives - that the media is biased against them.

The New York Times failed to mention that it's also clear Ms. Winfrey does not want Barack Obama, Joe Biden, or John McCain on the couch until after the election as well, but the Republican "storyline" part is right on. Palin has not spoken with the national media since her nomination and has only scheduled a taped, campaign-controlled appearance with Charlie Gibson on ABC.

Apparently, Republicans, who have already been haphazardly throwing around claims of sexism towards Palin, want her to be treated differently and allowed on Oprah's show because she is a woman. Isn't that, by definition, sexist?

You go girlfriend!

Florida,a good place to be from.Far far away from and this is just one more reason why.

You know when a group gives

You know when a group gives itself so much importance as to think they can threaten anyone that does not go along w/ their program, is basically , well just full of themselves. As is the case with the FFRW. Who the hell are they? And I live in Florida.(sorry to say, but I'm a transplant) :-) I am sick to death of all the initialized groups that are pro neo conservative, that try to force those in the real world to get in step with them. Not for nothing but, how dare you think you even have a reason to threaten anyone with boycott. But then again, it's what these groups do best. Threaten everyone that fails to align with them. I would be happy if these groups would just boycott politics all together. You see, we see it as politics in a democratic society. These groups see it as something else altogether. Reminds me of that scary GWB quote, "It would be a heck of a lot easier if this were a dictatorship, just as long as I'm the Dictator" If these people become unglued just because someone does not provide air time for their favorite, what makes them think that a threat to boycott is going to make a difference. We are not the Neo Conservative base and well, attacking or threatening purse strings is just how the Republican's operate. Money and control is central to their entire being. At this rate, right wing florida based groups are going to certainly alienate the sunshine state, and no one will flock to Fl. Not good for housing, service and the tourist industry that actually keeps Fl. barely afloat now as it is. It would behoove them to keep their threats to themselves. On the other hand, I doubt that many people are taking their orders from groups like the FFRW.Florida Female Rightwings, do they actually think they have that much power in the larger scheme of things. They can boycott and threaten from now til Nov. and it will not change my support for Barack Obama. Jude Rouslin

LINDA IVELL IS DISINGENUOUS,

LINDA IVELL IS DISINGENUOUS, DISHONEST OR MERELY INSTIGATING. REGARDLESS, SHE'S A DUPLICITOUS MORON TO BELIEVE PALIN'S VP DESIGNATION IS A NATIONAL HISTORICAL EVENT - BEYOND THE SCOPE OF THE GOP 'WORLD'. THERE WERE WOMEN VP'S & 'POLITICOS' BEFORE HER & THERE WILL BE EVEN MORE, AFTER HER - UNLESS SHE 'SOURS' THE NATION AGAINST REPEATING SUCH A CHOICE IN THE FUTURE! PALIN IS A SESSIONIST AS WAS JOHN CALHOUN OF THE OLD CONFEDERACY. I HAVE FAR MORE PROFESSIONAL EXECUTIVE EXPERIENCE THAN SHE, AS WELL AS LAW, PUBLIC POLICY & MBA DEGREES. YET LESS THAN 1/2 OF WHITE AMERICANS WANT TO BELIEVE SHE IS OF 'CONSEQUENCE' & ALL BUT DEMAND THE REST OF US DO AS WELL. BECAUSE SHE IS OF A LESSER INTELLECT THAN MOST AMERICANS, SHE HAS LITTLE TO TEACH OR TO CONTRIBUTE TO THE ACCUMULATED BODY OF KNOWLEDGE IN THIS NATION. THEREFORE, IVELL'S CRITICISM OF OPRAH IS AN UNNECESSARY RACIST RED HERRING.

Linda Ivell is Disingenuous

Nicely said - "she has little to teach or to contribute to the accumulated body of knowledge in this nation" and "unnecessary racist red herring" - Obama is that you? [wink] It's me, Margaret. Very nice thank you - I'll go off into the world today repeating the above. Well done.

Bring on Palin

If this group from the country's wang is so intent on having Palin on, I say Oprah should oblige them. Ask Palin some serious questions, like why is she an Alaskan Cecessionist? Why does she say she was against the bridge to nowhere, when she was for it? Why did she go into labor in TX and wait to go to the hospital in Alaska? What she thinks about her abstinance only policies now? How come Wasilla had a 22 million dollar debt when she left? What's up with the dominionist theology stuff? Why does she think the government should force a woman to carry a child that was conceived through incestual rape? Come on Oprah, make the wang people happy.

Sarah Palin/Oprah Winfrey

I tip my hat to Oprah for not being bullied around like the MSM journalists. If Sarah Palin wants to be on the Oprah Winfrey show let the liar wait like every one else until after the November election.

Oprah or Palin?

I'm renewing my O Magazine right now! With Love, From Iowa and New Mexico!

Oprah or Palin?

And done!

Raw Sexism

Yes, the Flawridians who are boycotting Oprah because she won't have active political candidates on her show, are guilty of sexism. They want Palin on her show simply because she's a woman. Their temper tantrums won't sway Oprah I'm sure.

Scary.

Not. I suspect Ms. Winfrey can afford the loss of a relative handful of viewers and/or subscribers Sorta like 16 Floridians threatening Warren Buffet you won't buy Geico insurance.

"That's Not America - That's Florida"

Kurt Loder of MTV News once memorably said that - I forget the context, but I laughed my ass out when I heard it.

I'm sure it'll make some waves, but unlike MSNBC's cowardice at folding on Olbermann anchoring Election Night, I don't think Oprah is inclined to knuckle under to a bunch of Khrister Right Racist Rednecks - not that I'm prejudiced against White Floridians or anything.... ;)

Scary.

Not. I suspect Ms. Winfrey can afford the loss of a relative handful of viewers and/or subscribers Sorta like 16 Floridians threatening Warren Buffet you won't buy Geico insurance.
