DNC Challenges Upcoming FEC Decision on McCain Matching Funds Use
A BUZZFLASH NEWS ALERT
by Amy Weiss
In a conference call Wednesday, Democratic National Committee (DNC) General Counsel Joe Sandler said the DNC is urging the Federal Election Commission (FEC) to fully investigate Sen. John McCain's withdrawal from public financing during the primary. Sandler claims McCain never made the request to withdraw, and shouldn't have been allowed to if he did.
The FEC is meeting Thursday to vote to release McCain from the "matching funds" program. Sandler said they should strike that vote and initiate a complete investigation, per normal procedure, as to whether McCain used the matching funds as collateral for a loan and whether he violated the procedure for withdrawal.
Sandler said the FEC should be able to complete such an investigation before Election Day and thinks the public should know if McCain violated campaign finance laws. He also said if McCain is charged with breaking the law, it would be one of the most substantial violations in FEC history.
In a memo released last week in preparation for Thursday's meeting, FEC lawyers said that McCain's withdrawal from the matching funds program was legitimate.
The DNC said this was an example of McCain thinking "the rules apply to everybody but himself," and it questions his integrity and highlights his hypocrisy.
