FDR's grandson to McCain: Keep your hands off our Social Security
A BUZZFLASH NEWS ALERT
by Amy Weiss
On the 73rd anniversary of the creation of Social Security, the Democratic National Committee (DNC) took the opportunity to criticize McCain for supporting the Bush plan for Social Security privatization. A new two-minute DNC Web ad features James Roosevelt Jr., DNC Rules and Bylaws Co-Chair and FDR's grandson. He says:
Like President Bush, [McCain] wants to privatize our social security, turning it into a gamble with our futures and making 8.6 million American seniors vulnerable to poverty. John McCain has even said "Social Security is a disgrace"...Barack Obama released his own statement today:
I couldn't disagree more. Our Social Security isn't a disgrace, it's a compact, a trust between generations of Americans, it's a reflection of our values.
As President, I will protect Social Security for today's seniors and future generations. That means strengthening Social Security's solvency while protecting middle class families from benefit cuts, tax increases or increases in the retirement age. It means treating Social Security not as a political football or describing it as an "absolute disgrace," but instead honoring it as the cornerstone of the social compact in this country. And it means opposing efforts to privatize Social Security, as I did when President Bush proposed risky private accounts a few years ago. Privatization is wrong and tears at the fabric of Social Security -- the very idea of mutual responsibility -- by subjecting a secure, earned retirement to the whims of the market. The Bush privatization plan that Senator McCain now embraces would tell millions of elderly Americans that they're on their own, putting them at risk of falling into poverty. That's not what this country is about.
The McCain campaign mentioned Social Security today only peripherally in a press release, attacking Obama's tax plan: "If voters consider Barack Obama's record of opposing tax cuts and his outspoken proposals to raise taxes on family savings, Social Security and small businesses -- this latest campaign promise lacks a single shred of credibility."

McCain's privatization scheme is the same Wall Street give away that his hero Bush proposed. What I wonder is,if this scheme had been implemented in 2004 as Georgie boy had wanted, how much would have been lost to the brokers by now? Would Wall Street have lost 10%,30%,50% or maybe all of it would have been used/lost to prop up this ponzi scheme we call Wall Street. Most seniors are in terrible financial shape right now with many having to work just to make ends meet. The golden years we were promised have already been turned into nothing more than supporting WalMarts bottom line. Greeters and shopping cart wranglers, that is the new retirement. FDR's vision of a dignified retirement is one we cannot abandon on a whim. Social Security is not a welfare program,it is an insurance policy,as FDR called it.It also is not a disgrace as McCain recently called it. Perhaps McCain should try a can of Friskies cat food once and then tell me SSI is a disgrace. What is a disgrace is McCain's view of this insurance program. What would bring SSI back to FDR's conceptive vision is to make all IOU's be paid back and keeping the neo-cons filthy hands off of it.
Social compact.

Be fair.
We should give privatization a fair hearing before deciding whether or not to make changes. If you look at countries like Chile, privatization was a smashing success for fund managers and banks. They were able to extract 30% off the top of worker contributions and became the wealthiest corporations in the country. The workers got to earn 3-5% on their investments every year and were guaranteed to retire in abject poverty.
If we truly are a nation that supports conservative ideals, supply side economics and the trickle down tax theory, we should not only embrace privatization but do it quickly! Our billionaires, banks and Wall Street are running out of ways to suck the cash and the life out of our economy.
