Google-Verizon Pact Worse than Feared: Democracy on the Internet Faces Foreclosure

The following is an August 9th news release from FreePress.net about the betrayal of Google, in its violation of net neutrality, with Verizon.
"“This is not real Net Neutrality. And this pact would harm the millions of Americans who have pleaded with our leaders in Washington to defend the free and open Internet. President Obama, Congress and the FCC should reject this deal, restore the authority of the agency that’s supposed to protect Internet users, and safeguard Net Neutrality once and for all.”
In response to Google and Verizon’s “policy framework” unveiled today, MoveOn.Org Civic Action, Credo Action, the Progressive Change Campaign Committee, ColorofChange.org and Free Press, all members of the SavetheInternet.com Coalition, issued the following joint statement:
"The Google-Verizon pact isn’t just as bad as we feared — it’s much worse. They are attacking the Internet while claiming to preserve it. Google users won’t be fooled.
"They are promising Net Neutrality only for a certain part of the Internet, one that they’ll likely stop investing in. But they are also paving the way for a new 'Internet' via fiber and wireless phones where Net Neutrality will not apply and corporations can pick and choose which sites people can easily view on their phones or any other Internet device using these networks.
"It would open the door to outright blocking of applications, just as Comcast did with BitTorrent, or the blocking of content, just as Verizon did with text messages from NARAL Pro-choice America. It would divide the information superhighway, creating new private fast lanes for the big players while leaving the little guy stranded on a winding dirt road.
"Worse still, this pact would turn the Federal Communications Commission into a toothless watchdog, left fruitlessly chasing complaints and unable to make rules of its own.
“This is not real Net Neutrality. And this pact would harm the millions of Americans who have pleaded with our leaders in Washington to defend the free and open Internet. President Obama, Congress and the FCC should reject this deal, restore the authority of the agency that’s supposed to protect Internet users, and safeguard Net Neutrality once and for all.”

I'd like to note that internet service providers are already charging for "bandwidth" at both ends of the fiber optic backbone that I suspect was largely financed by public money (and many wireless contracts also specify a limit on total mb). Browsers and content providers should be able to use the bandwidth they are paying for as they see fit.
Allowing ISPs to engage in creating more layers of artificial meta-charges to increase their revenue while effectively decreasing their overall bandwidth and engaging in de-facto censorship seems like a backhanded way of enabling even more egregious profiteering by telecoms while simultaneously allowing them to skimp on investing in infrastructure to handle the service they are already selling.
The US is lagging far behind most modern countries both in speed and depth of penetration of so called "high speed" service. The backbone of the US internet is not running anywhere near its capacity, so ISPs should be encouraged to help bring the US into the 21st century by actually investing in local infrastructure to attract customers rather than moving us backwards by charging more for providing less.

So, in other words, we're screwed. Not sure where Craig Aaron has been, but the FCC has been "a toothless watchdog" for over 30 years now. Well, that's not entirely true, they almost always give the networks whatever they want.
Never forget the Supreme Court said money was free speech, and if you want free speech you gotta pay for it.

It's been 12 years since the Digital Millennium Copyright Act was passed and insanity became law. How many people know that almost everybody who watches a DVD they have PURCHASED on a linux computer could be sent to federal prison for 5 years and/or pay a $100,000 fine? That's because the _knowledge_ needed to read the DVD, libdvdcss, is proprietary and protected and must be acquired along approved channels.
How many of you cared about that then? Didn't use linux. No sweat off your nose, right? All those people talking about open standards, open code and open this and open that...just fanatics right?
