Another Historic Step On Impeachment

A BUZZFLASH NEWS ALERT

Progressive Democrats of America
Mobilizing the Progressive Vote

Sparked by an insurgency among delegates, the California Democratic Party has taken an historic step forward on the issue of impeachment. In a resolution affirmed by the full state party convention Sunday, the Democrats called on the U.S. Congress to use its subpoena power to investigate misdeeds of President Bush and Vice President Cheney - and to hold the Administration accountable "with appropriate remedies and punishment, including impeachment." The delegate insurgency was coordinated by Progressive Democrats of America and its allies.

While Speaker Pelosi had declared impeachment "off the table," the Democratic Party rank-and-file has demonstrated its commitment to putting the issue "on" the table. And it's no longer just the rank-and-file: Even among the members of the convention's Resolutions Committee (appointed by the California Party chair), the impeachment resolution was the top vote-getter (tied with one other resolution).

Coming on the heels of mass actions and resolutions across the country in support of impeachment, and Congressman Dennis Kucinich's introduction of Articles of Impeachment against Cheney, this action by the powerful California Democratic Party builds on the pro-impeachment momentum.

The resolution refers to Bush and Cheney having acted in a manner "subversive of the Constitution" by. . .

1) using false information to justify the invasion of Iraq

2) authorizing "the torture of prisoners of war"

3) "authorizing wiretaps on U.S. citizens without obtaining a warrant"

4) "disclosing the name of an undercover CIA operative"

5) suspending "the historic Writ of Habeas Corpus by ordering the indefinite detention of so-called enemy combatants

6) "signing statements used to ignore or circumvent portions of over 750 Congressional statutes."

The resolution ends by calling for "vigorous investigation" and "appropriate remedies and punishment, including impeachment."

PDA Director Tim Carpenter said: "This was an example of the Party grassroots speaking its mind, and the Party officials responding to the call. This action represents the successful culmination of PDA's one-month, eleven-city barnstorming tour across California - aimed at putting impeachment and ending the occupation of Iraq at the top of the Party's agenda."

Cheney Impeachment

Dennis Kucinich is putting everything on the line in filing Articles of Impeachment against Cheney. The way we can support him is to contact our Representative, Pelosi, Jack Murtha who is slowly starting to lean toward impeachment and House Judiciary Committee members.
Rep. Howard Berman(D-CA), whose District Office is in Van Nuys, is considered a key swing vote in the House Judiciary Committee and his offices need to be contacted for certain.

Impeachment

Impeachment actions should proceed, even if bush & cheney aren't impeached on the first try. The pressure must be unrelenting, with a call to all Americans to demand that their elected representatives live up to their moral and ethical obligations to bring the bush crime cartel to justice or face almost certain defeat at the polls come next election.

There's more to it than that...

Political activism was present everywhere in San Diego. In front of the Convention Center, Nancy Pelosi was forced to pass through crowds of people with banners and placks calling for "Impeachment". Most of us delegates had patches on our shirts, blouses, and sleeves calling for impeachment. The Executive Committee would not allow us to hold up "Impeachhment" banners from the floor while she spoke, but as she exited the building, there where literally hundreds of people along her path; they were cheering for her, clapping their hands- and letting her know that "Impeachment" should be on the table.

It initially appeared that we would have a problem getting any "Impeachment" language included in any resolution- the original resolution was a direct call for impeachment. But the Resolutions Committee, to their great credit- saw the outpouring of support for impeachment and rolled the sentiment into the final resolution, which we overwhelmingly adopted.

Our primary goal was to let Speaker Pelosi know there was, in fact, a groundswell of support for impeachment. It is not just those in the grassroots calling for impeachment, but virtually everyone in the central committee. She saw that while she was there, and now the message is loud and clear.

Investigation. Accountablity. Impeachment.

Impeachment

It is now time for the Democratic Party to stand up and begin proceedings of impeachment for both Bush and Cheney and while you are at it, add Condoleeza Rice to the mix as well.
When are the people who we elected into office going to stand up against these law breakers and begin to take action?
To ignore it, you are then part of the problem and must be considered as abettors.

Impeachment

How clever of the Republican Party to "trivialize" impeachment with the "soap opera" impeachment of Bill Clinton. Now the Democrats are required to demonstrate 124 percent (incidentally, the percentage of the vote for George W. Bush in at least one Ohio precinct) that impeachment proceedings initiated against any Republican is not "pay-back".

The Democrats certainly are faced with Hobson's choices. To impeach could create sympathy for the object of the charges and anger some potential voters and to not impeach for the many crimes committed by members of this Administration means that future Administrations have little to stop them from similar or more egregious criminal behaviors.

If the strategy has been to investigate until the weight of the evidence is so great that even the Republican voters are demonstrating in the streets for removal, then we probably won't reach that tipping point soon enough to stop the bloodshed in Iraq or to stop this Administration from declaring "Martial Law" before the 2008 election, a highly risky maneuver given the anger in this country but this Administration has demonstrated an incredible "chutzpah" that defies rational thought and they might just pull that maneuver.

Kudos to the Progressive Democrats of California, you have my support.
