7 Greenpeace Protesters Against Offshore Drilling Treated Like Heinous Criminals for Protesting Against BP and Shell

w

7 Greenpeace protestors were arrested in Louisiana for an act of civil disobedience: painting an offshore drilling message on the side of a ship that will assist Shell Oil in drilling in the Arctic.  They should have been given a parade and welcomed as heroes instead of being charged with "crimes" that could net them up to 7 years in prison.

The "Lafourche Parish sheriff’s Office, Sgt. Lesley Hill Peters, suggested that the protesters could also face terrorism-related charges. The New Orleans Joint Terrorism Task Force 'is looking into the matter,. she said."

This is an unconscionable action on the part of local law enforcement in a parish directly impacted by the negligent and  proscutable behavior of BP:

A Greenpeace representative argued that the charges were disproportionate. “It is outrageous that prosecutors would confront peaceful protesters with such a heavy hand while not a single BP executive has been charged for the devastation they have wrought on the Gulf of Mexico and the people and animals that depend on it,” Phil Radford, the group’s executive director, said in a statement.

If we are going to regain our nation from the tyrannical and destructive grip of mega-corporations, more of us will need to get off our laptops and commit acts of civil disobedience; signing online petitions isn't going to change the pernicious oligarchical grip on America.

We will need the courage and tenacity of the 7 Greenpeace protesters. We will need to match our actions with our words.

This week's BuzzFlash Wings of Justice Award goes to 7 Greenpeace protesters who are showing us the way to freedom from corporate rule.

This is why we have juries

If they think the punishment does not fit the crime, any jury has the constitutional right to set free even the obviously guilty.

The defense attorney has a duty to inform the jury about this right.

Suffering the consequences of oppression is a vital part ....

..a vital part of civil disobedience. These brave activists knew that arrest and prosecution were a probable outcome. Just as Martin Luther King knew that his calls for racial equality would likely land him in some shithole jail cell in Birmingham. The best thing we can do for these protestors is donate our  time and money toward the defense of those who have the courage of their convictions. We must know their names and honor their deeds and show that the executives at BP, who sit comfortably in theri suites are the real criminals. Will this action be the first of many long and frustrating steps to make that a reality? Here in the Corporate State of America?

Remember...civil disobedience and non-violent protest DOES NOT WORK unless you are prepared and willing first  to suffer the consequences of your oppressors.

Missed Opportunity

Calling for civil disobedience is very Gandi-esk; however, there is something that Buzzflash could be doing right here on the Net.  Call for a new investigation of 9/11.  Over 1,000 architects and engineers have publicly questioned the 19-box-cutter-welding-Arabs conspiracy theory put forth by the government to explain the catastrophes on 9/11 and to justify two "defensive" wars in Arab countries far from our borders.  Why do these professionals question the government explanation?  All three skyscrapers fell at nearly a free-fall speed, meaning the falling debris met no resistance from lower floors as it fell--violations of the laws of physics.  And because all three buildings fell incredibly symmetrically into their own footprint--violations of the laws of probability.  Three thousand Americans died and the physical facts point to an inside job, when will that make the Buzzflash front page?

stand for the land

At Eagle Rock on the Yellow Dog plains in northern Upper Peninsula of Michigan, the Ojibwa natives are camping. It is the property that was part of their treaty. It may look like civil disobedience, but it is officially still public land.  On earth day this year, a heroic lady was arrested for trespassing there, where she walked with her dog for 10 years and has pleaded not guilty. Coalitions have been formed to protect the sacred and pristine land from sulfide mining.  Please visit standfortheland.com and read 'overview' for the whole story.  It continues to be contentious and seems to parallel many elements of the BP disastrous saga. If this mining goes forward it will impact the entire region, and forces to oppose future assault on this wilderness will be weakened. We have the most power that we will ever have, right now.  Please help.  Thank you.

But They Violated The Ten Corporate Commandments!!!

   1. "I am the CORPORATION your God, who with trinkets bought from you the land of freedom, converting it into the house of slavery. You shall have no other gods before US..."

   2. "Do not make an image or any likeness not approved from above..."

   3. "Do not swear falsely of the CORPORATION..."

   4. "Remember the Work day and keep it wholey".

   5. "Honor your CEO and your managers..."

   6. "Do not murder, except in service to the CORPORATION "

   7. "Do not commit adultery. That privilege is soley retained for your betters."

   8. "Do not steal any property claimed by the CORPORATION. You own nothing, not even your lives."

   9. "Do not bear false witness against the CORPORATION. Our word is law."

  10. "Do not covet your employer's life. You are but to serve."

The gas and oil industry owns Louisiana

300,000 Louisianans are employed by the natural gas and oil production industry. Both Diaper Dandy David Vitter and his Democratic opponent Charlie Melancon are for more drilling in the Gulf. So is Louisiana's other US Senator Mary Landrieu, DINO.

The state that gave America Huey Long, who fought Standard Oil, American ancestor of today's BP, all his public life, is now owned by the oil production industry.

You know, I'm sorry if I disillusion or piss anybody off when I say this, but the "good" people of Louisiana are going to vote for more pro-corporate fucks in November.
